Green fluorescent protein

GFP is a chromoprotein, that absorbs in the blue and green range of the spectrum and shows a strong green fluorescence. Unlike all other chromoproteins, the chromophore is just the oxidation product of 3 adjacent aminoacids. For this reason, GFP has become a very important marker in biochemistry and microbiology during the past years.
It also shows a photodynamics and photochemistry interesting in its own right. That was my motivation to do research on the properties of GFP and its chromophore during the past years. I utilized spectroscopic methods, particularly time resolved spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy and hole-burning spectroscopy to investigate the protein and its chromophore.

Click on the picture to see a chime presentation of this protein. However, you need the Chime Plug-in to do this. It is easy to install and truly worth doing !
